Perimenopause and menopause symptoms explained
Menopause occurs when your ovaries cease egg production, leading to a decrease in hormone levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, which can cause various symptoms. Menopause is defined as not having a period for 12 consecutive months, while perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, during which you still experience periods but may have fluctuating and low hormone levels especially estrogen that can trigger a range of symptoms.
Being able to recognize and understand the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause enables you to seek the support and treatment you need.
Common symptoms of the perimenopause and menopause
Every menopause is unique and each woman’s journey is different. We provide evidence-based, personalized and holistic care tailored to your experiences and we take great pleasure in supporting you through this process together.
Hot Flashes: One of the most common symptoms of menopause, hot flashes are characterized by sudden feelings of warmth that spread across the body, particularly affecting the face, neck, and chest. The frequency and intensity of hot flashes can vary from person to person.
Night Sweats: These intense hot flashes occur during the night and can disrupt sleep, leading to daytime fatigue.
Mood Changes: Many women experience feelings of sadness, irritability, or anxiety, which may be caused by hormonal fluctuations or influenced by sleep disruptions from other symptoms.
Vaginal Dryness: Lower estrogen levels can result in discomfort, itching, or pain, especially during intercourse.
Decreased Libido: Since estrogen and testosterone are crucial for libido, you may notice a decline in your sex drive during perimenopause and menopause.
Sleep Disorders: In addition to night sweats, you may experience insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns, which can contribute to fatigue.
Memory and Concentration Issues: Some women may encounter “brain fog,” which includes difficulties with focus, recalling information, or completing tasks.
Joint Aches and Pains: Hormonal changes can lead to inflammation in the joints, resulting in discomfort and pain.
These are just a few of the symptoms that can arise during perimenopause and menopause.
Are you suffering from unusual menopause symptoms?
Sometimes you might experience unusual menopause symptoms such as cold flush occurring straight after hot flushes, eyes feeling grittier and drier, brittle and soft nails, heartburn, dizziness and lightheadedness, feeling of skin crawling or itchiness, tinnitus or burning mouth sensation.
If you are experiencing any uncommon symptoms, please call us a free mini menopause chat. It is essential to ensure that such symptoms are due to menopause and not any other underlying medical condition.
